What Road Rules Abroad collects, why, who it's shared with and how to have it deleted.

Road Rules Abroad is run by Ryan Burke in Sydney, Australia ("we"). This page explains what we collect when you use the website and the app, why, and what you can ask us to do about it. We follow the Australian Privacy Principles, and the EU and UK GDPR for visitors from those places. Questions go to hello@roadrulesabroad.com.

The short version

  • You don't need an account. The app works without telling us who you are.
  • Your purchase is handled by Lemon Squeezy, which collects your payment details. We never see your card.
  • We only use advertising cookies if you say yes.
  • We don't sell your information to anyone.

What we collect, and why

When you visit the website. Our host, Cloudflare, processes your IP address and the pages you request so the site can be delivered and protected from attacks. We use your approximate country (worked out from your IP address, not stored) to suggest where your licence is from and to decide whether to ask about cookies. We measure visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which doesn't use cookies or track you across sites.

If you say yes to cookies. We load the advertising tags of Meta (Facebook and Instagram), Google, TikTok and Pinterest. They tell us which ads led to a visit or a purchase, so we can stop paying for ads that don't work. These companies set their own cookies and use the information under their own privacy policies. If you say no, none of these tags load. You can change your answer at any time with "Cookie choices" at the bottom of every page.

When you buy. Lemon Squeezy is the merchant of record for every sale: it takes the payment, charges the right tax, sends your receipt and issues your licence key. It collects your name, email address, billing country and payment details under its own privacy policy. It shares your name, email address, country and order details with us so we can deliver your licence key, answer questions and give refunds. We also add your name and email address to MailerLite, our email service, to send you one email about using the app.

When you use the app. The app stores your choices (the countries you picked, your checklist ticks, your licence key) on your device only. When you unlock it, the app sends your licence key and a plain description of the device (for example "iPhone, home screen app") to our server, which checks the key with Lemon Squeezy and records the device against it, so a shared key can be stopped. The app rechecks the key about every two weeks. Nothing else is sent.

If you give us your email. If you sign up for a checklist, we keep your email address, the countries you chose and the date you start driving (if you give one, to time the reminders) in MailerLite, our email service, to send what you asked for. Every email has an unsubscribe link.

If you email us. We keep the conversation so we can help you, and delete it when it's no longer needed.

When you click a hire car link. The link takes you to our hire car partner's website, which knows you came from us so it can pay us a commission. What happens there is covered by that site's privacy policy.

Who we share it with

Only the services above: Cloudflare (hosting and analytics), Lemon Squeezy (payments and licence keys), MailerLite (email, if you sign up), and the advertising companies named above (only if you agree). Some of them process information outside Australia, including in the United States and the European Union. We share information with authorities only when the law requires it.

How long we keep it

Purchase records are kept for seven years, because tax law requires it. Email sign-ups are kept until you unsubscribe. Support emails are deleted within two years. Analytics are kept in summary form.

What you can ask us to do

You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it (except what we must keep for tax). Email hello@roadrulesabroad.com and we'll reply within 30 days. If you're unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au, or to the data protection authority where you live.

Children

Road Rules Abroad is for drivers. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.

Changes

If we change how we handle your information, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
